Anthony Austin
Anthony is a higher education professional with experience across admissions, enrollment strategy, and student success. His work centers on expanding access to college and helping students and families navigate the postsecondary landscape with clarity and confidence. Known for pairing data-informed strategies with student-centered approach, he brings both analytical insight and empathy to his practice.
Throughout his career, Anthony has served in roles ranging from frontline recruitment and counseling to leading large-scale college fairs and outreach initiatives across New Orleans and multiple U.S. regions, including the South, West Coast, and Mid-Atlantic. Whether coordinating extraordinary events or advancing access-focused initiatives, his consistent goal has been to make higher education more approachable and inclusive.
Anthony is known for his ability to guide students through the college selection process in a thoughtful and individualized manner. He encourages exploration of a wide range of pathways—selective universities, community colleges, specialized institutions, online programs, apprenticeships, and gap years—emphasizing fit over prestige. His collaborative low-pressure style helps students engage more openly and make informed decisions aligned with their goals. Anthony believes that the perfect fit is out there for everyone, but students have to be willing to look under every rock.
His doctoral research examined the lived experiences of African American undergraduate men considering membership in predominantly white fraternities. He examined the cultural tensions, motivations, and identity negotiations behind those choices—spotlighting a part of college life that’s rarely discussed but deeply influential. That work fueled his teaching, where he facilitated discussions on race, identity, and campus culture while strengthening students’ critical reading and thinking, writing, and analytical skills. His classrooms boosted confidence, sharpened voices, and helped students make sense of how campus culture shapes who they are and who they are becoming. Anthony’s commitment to effective teaching received recognition with an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016 and subsequent nomination in 2020.
Active in the profession, Anthony has presented topics including enrollment strategies, racial diversity, and equity in selective admissions. Grounded and student-focused, he believes that informed, honest conversations can meaningfully shape students’ education trajectories. He continues to collaborate with educators, institutions, and communities to support student success in higher education.
Anthony holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics both Masters and PhD degrees in Educational Leadership, all from the University of New Orleans.
